What Does It Really Take to Become an Interior Designer?

If you love interiors, you may have already found yourself rearranging furniture in your head, saving room ideas or wondering how you would change a particular space. That interest can be the beginning of something much bigger.
Working as an interior designer, however, is not just about choosing nice furniture or knowing which colours look good together. There is a lot that happens before a finished room starts to take shape. You need to understand the client, look carefully at the property, work with measurements, consider the budget and make decisions that can actually be put into practice.

What Does An Interior Designer Do?
The work normally starts with the client.
Before thinking about a colour scheme or looking for furniture, you need to find out what the client wants from the space. How will they use it? What do they need? What do they like? Is there anything they want to keep? And, of course, what is their budget?
The property matters just as much.
Take the time to examine the rooms and make notes on their sizes. Consider the placement of their windows and doors. Also, take into consideration how light will penetrate the room. And then consider the way in which people will move about in the room. Just one small aspect of the existing area may influence the entire concept of your design.
Once you have gathered all of these facts, you will be ready to begin your design.
Is Creativity All You Need?
Creativity goes a long way; however, it is not sufficient alone. One can create a very well-designed room, but the room will be useless if the furniture is too big or there is no space left for walking around the room.
The same applies to materials and finishes. A material might look beautiful but may not be suitable for the way a room is going to be used. A particular piece of furniture might be perfect for the design but outside the client’s budget.
Interior designers have to make these sorts of decisions regularly. You also need to be comfortable changing your ideas. The first option is not always the one that works best.
What Skills Do You Need To Learn?
There are quite a few areas to get familiar with. Space planning is one of the most important. You need to understand how furniture fits into a room and how people move through it.
Then there are concepts and moodboards, colour, materials, finishes and lighting. You may also work with FF&E, furniture sourcing, joinery, specifications and costings.
The job also involves talking to people. You may have to present your ideas to a client, discuss changes, speak with a supplier or explain something to a contractor. Being able to communicate your thinking clearly can save a lot of confusion later.

Do You Need A Degree To Learn Interior Design?
Not necessarily. There are a few routes into this field. Even if you have never studied interior design, you can still start with the basics.
If you are new, it can feel tough to choose where to begin. There is a lot of material out there, and it is easy to bounce between topics. Then you miss how the parts connect.
One way to make it clearer is to work on a real project.
You can start with the brief, look at the property, work on the layout, develop a concept and then move towards materials, furniture, lighting and the other details.
Why Is Practical Project Work Useful?
Because a real project gives you something to think about.
Take space planning. You can read about space planning in a book, or watch a video about it. Still, it feels different once you are in a real room. You also have real limits and real needs to deal with.
Maybe the client is asking for a dining spot. They might also want more storage. And they want a place that feels nice to sit in. But the space itself is not that big. Suddenly you have to make decisions.
The same happens with budgets. You may have a particular material in mind, only to find that it costs more than expected. You then have to look at other options without losing the feel of the design.
Those little problems are useful because they make you think.
What Can You Do With Interior Design Skills?
There are several routes you might take. A lot of folks look for a spot in an interior design studio. Some also aim for entry-level jobs, and some look at freelance gigs. A few people plan to open their own practice later.
Your first role is not the end of the story.
In the beginning, focus on learning and on work you can point to. Let it show your skills. A portfolio can become particularly useful as you start looking at career opportunities.
It can show your ideas, your process and how you approach a project.
How Can You Become More Confident With Your Designs?
The simple answer is to practise.
Work on different briefs. Try layouts that you would not normally choose. Put together concepts and explain why you made certain choices. Please ask for feedback, and be ready to revise your work.
You will not get every choice correct at first. That is normal for learning. One round of feedback can make you rethink a design. If you step away for a bit, you may notice a flaw on your own when you come back.
